Transport

We found the transport system fantastic in Budapest. The 3 day and 7day passes gives one the freedom of the trams, buses,  metro and even the cog railway. Just buy the pass and you have the freedom to roam anywhere within the boundaries of Budapest. The passes can be  purchased at most Metro stations.  Please don't forget to put your name on the pass.  We had an unfortunate incident because we were unaware that the names had to be put onto the passes.

We purchased two seven-day passes for the local transport (Incredible value for 3600ft). We showed our passes two or three times on the Metro with no problem, but then on the second full day (day 3) an inspector asked to see our passes on the number 19 tram. He demanded that we both got off the tram with him as he said that the passes were not in order, as we had not filled in our names in the place provided.

Firstly he asked for 6000 ft each or the police would be called, then the fine would be 12,00ft.each. We said that we did not have that sort of cash on us so would he call the police. He then made a call on his mobile. We waited about 10 minutes and no police arrived. He then informed us that he would only charge one of us 6000ft. I told him we would wait for the police. After waiting a while longer we said that if they didn’t turn up soon we were leaving. He then asked us how much cash we had. We told him we only had 1000ft.on us. He suddenly changed his mind, and said he would accept this; he pocketed the 1000ft and allowed us to put our names on the passes and proceed.   But this incident  in no way put us off Budapest or spoilt our holiday, We now just look back and smile about it, and put it down to experience.   So be warned - fill in your names on the Passes
With  transport passes  we were free to explore the whole of Budapest. We mostly used the trams. The Metro is fine, but with a tram you see  more of the City as you travel, unlike the underground.  Sometimes we just jumped on the first tram that came just to explore places on the outskirts of the City, then got the next tram back again.
We found the most useful trams were::- on the Buda side 18,19 and 61 and on  the Pest side 2, 4 and 6. Please see the map below.

Although we found the trams a very easy way to travel around the City, on the second day we tried to catch a tram from Moricz Korter to Batthyany ter but found ourselves  at Etele ter.   It turned out to be no problem, in fact it was a bonus, we saw yet another part  of Budapest that we would not have: and with transport passes, it didn't cost us a penny.
Because of the building of a new metro and repairs to Liberty Bridge at present (Jan 2008) the number6 tram is split into two just north of Boraros ter. It is replaced by a bus that is clearly marked 6v.  But we did not use the bus we just used the interruption in service to walk the short distance to the Food Market.

The metro is very easy to navigate being just three lines. The M3 (Blue) runs north south, the M2 (Red) runs east west and the M1 (Yellow) runs north east.  They all interchange  at Deak ter.
